Supporting Animal Welfare Society of South Africa (AWS)
Doing good rather than being seen to do good is at the core of everything we do at Skylos Collective. For this reason we’re delighted to be supporting The Animal Welfare Society of South Africa (AWS) and pledging 2% of our profits to this awesome charity.
A non-governmental organisation, AWS has been operating in South Africa since 1929 and has had a positive impact on the lives of literally thousands of animals, almost always helping them when they’re at their most vulnerable.
AWS works tirelessly fighting for the welfare of animals that have been neglected, abandoned, or need a new forever home. With its own shelter, hospital and clinic based in Cape Town, the organisation rehabilitates injured animals (from cats and dogs to Eagle Owlets and Western Cape Leopard Toads), but also cares for stray cats and dogs that without their help would be subject to a very uncertain future.
From its base in Philippi, Cape Town, AWS cares for a staggering four thousand animals each month. Open seven days a week to accommodate those who are unable to bring animals to the clinic during the working week, they have four fully equipped operating theatres where they undertake orthopedic operations, sterilisations and other often lifesaving procedures. Busy 24/7, it’s not unusual for the AWS to be caring for over 175 at any given time.
Committed come what may, even 2020’s intensive Covid lockdown restrictions couldn’t curb their passion to protect those animals needing care. During 2020 AWS undertook:
- Nearly 12,000 consultations
- Vaccinated over 4,000 animals
- Undertook 3500 procedures, of which more than 2,000 were sterilisations
And most impressively found new and loving homes for 151 cats and twenty-six dogs.
Ella Peters, founder of Skylos Collective says: “We decided to support AWS due to my connections with Cape Town. My partner and I have ten-year-old golden retriever whose name is Alli who lived in Cape Town until just two years ago. From the outset we knew supporting organisations that make an impact at grass roots level was important to us, and the work AWS undertakes is very much in line with our values.”
To finish this post, here’s a heartwarming story of five incredible young champs rescuing a pup in need.
The 'Magnificent 5' are five young boys from Cape Town’s Sweet Home Farm informal settlement who rescued an abandoned Labrador they found lying in the bushes in Philippi East. They first tried whistling to the dog to encourage him to stand up, but when this didn’t work two boys stayed with the dog while the others went in search of with a makeshift collar and a lead which they gently fitted around the dog's neck. The journey to AWS took hours, but they finally reached the clinic and were awarded for their heroic endeavours. And ‘Champ’ the newly named Labrador has since found a loving forever home.
